Teleprompter tools compared, including where we lose.

Nine tools for recording a talking-head video, on the things that actually decide which one you pick: what it costs, how the prompter behaves, whether it edits, and where your footage ends up. Every rival's row is what they publish. Our own weaknesses are listed too, with the tool that does it better.

The table

One row per decision. The column that surprises people is the fourth from the bottom.

The one structural difference

Most of this table is a matter of degree. One row is not.

Descript, VEED, Loom and BIGVU store your media on their servers. Riverside captures locally and then uploads. That is a reasonable design — it is how you get server-side rendering, team libraries and 4K pipelines.

Founder Studio records, edits and stitches in your browser, on your machine. The video file never leaves it; only script text you explicitly ask the AI to draft is sent anywhere. If you are recording a YC application video, an investor intro or an unreleased product demo, that difference is the whole decision — and it is not something a cloud tool can add later without rebuilding.

When to pick something else

Five things other tools do better than we do. If one of these is your job, use theirs.

No voice-activated scrolling

Better: PromptSmart, Speakflow

Our teleprompter auto-paces and you can nudge it, but it does not listen and follow your voice. If you improvise heavily off-script, PromptSmart's VoiceTrack is the better tool and we would tell you so.

No captions or subtitles

Better: BIGVU, VEED, Descript

You get a clean stitched video, not a captioned one. If you publish to social where burned-in captions matter, you will need a second tool for that step.

No eye-contact correction

Better: VEED

We solve the eyeline by putting the text next to the lens, not by fixing your gaze afterwards in AI. That works, but it is a different approach and VEED's correction is genuinely good.

Editing depth

Better: Descript

We do trim, split, reorder, mix takes and stitch. Descript edits video by editing a transcript and is far deeper. We are aiming at speed for one talking-head video, not at a full edit suite.

No native mobile app

Better: BIGVU, PromptSmart

It is a browser tool. That is what keeps your recordings on your device, but it also means there is no app-store app and no offline mobile capture.

What each rival is genuinely best at

BIGVU

Best all-in-one suite if you want captions and subtitles in the same workflow.

Teleprompter.com

More scroll control than anything else here — the pick for stage and studio presenters.

PromptSmart

The best voice-activated scrolling available. If you drift off-script, this is the one.

Speakflow

The only one that overlays a prompter on a live call with background blur.

Riverside

Broadcast-quality multi-track recording. If you interview guests remotely, use this.

Descript

The strongest editor in this list by a wide margin. Nothing here competes on editing depth.

Loom

Fastest way to send an async screen share to a colleague. Different job to this one.

VEED

AI eye-contact correction genuinely works, and the free tier is usable if you accept a watermark.

Questions people actually ask

Do my recordings get uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording, editing and stitching all happen in your browser on your device, and the video file never leaves it. Only the script text you explicitly ask the AI to draft is sent to the cloud. This is the main structural difference from Descript, VEED, Loom and BIGVU, all of which store your media on their servers.

What does Founder Studio cost?

The free tier records, edits and stitches unlimited videos with generous daily AI limits. Pro is $19/month and raises the AI-assist limits roughly twentyfold, plus heavier live and screen-capture use. There is no watermark on the free tier.

Is it better than Descript?

Not for editing — Descript is the stronger editor and we would not claim otherwise. Founder Studio is faster for the specific job of writing, reading and shipping one talking-head video without uploading it anywhere.

Does it do voice-activated scrolling?

No. The teleprompter auto-paces to a target duration with a lead-in and countdown, but it does not follow your voice. PromptSmart and Speakflow do that better.

What is it actually best for?

One person recording a talking-head video to camera — a YC application video, an investor intro, a product demo, a course segment — where you want a script, a prompter, multiple takes and a finished cut in one sitting, and where the footage is confidential enough that you would rather it never left your machine.

Try it on your next video

Free tier records, edits and stitches unlimited videos with no watermark. Nothing uploads. Pro is $19/month when you want the higher AI limits.
